NCCP Certification
Volleyball New Brunswick promotes responsible coaching and
endorses the 3M National Coaching Certification (NCCP) program. We believe it
is through programs like the NCCP that coaches may educate themselves to ensure
that our athletes are taught with the highest degree of quality and
responsibility.
The 3M NCCP is a training and certification program for coaches
in more than 60 sports across Canada, and is a pillar of our sport system. The
principal objective of the program is to train and certify coaches working with
participants/athletes of all abilities and ages, from community sport and skill
instruction to high performance competition.
Certification Levels
Certification levels with the new 3M NCCP program includes the
following:
-
Community Coach (formerly Level 1)
-
Provinical Coach (formerly Level 2)
-
National Coach (formerly Level 3)
-
International Coach (formerly Level 4 & 5)
Components of each level
To be complelely certified for a level, each candidate is
required to complete each of the following three core components:
-
Theory
-
Technical
-
Practical
After completing all three components, the successful candidate
will receive a "Passport" that officially recognizes their accomplishment as a
certified coach at that level.
Theory
In the Theory component, coaches learn essential principles of coaching:
planning, sport safety, skill analysis and development, mental preparation,
training methodology, and leadership, among others. The length of the Theory
course is as follows:
-
Community Coach (formerly Level 1): 13.5 hrs
-
Provinical Coach (formerly Level 2): 19 hrs
-
National Coach (formerly Level 3): 28 hrs
The theory component encompasses all sports. As a result, your
theory component obtained in any sport can be used for your volleyball
certification.
The cost of the theory courses depends on the level. Theory
courses are offered by the Centre of Coaching Education in New Brunswick.
Technical
The technical component of the program covers volleyball-specific information
including: skills and drills, rules of play, equipment, training methods, and
preparation for competition. Although it is not mandatory, it is highly
recommended that coaches obtain their theory component before registering for a
technical course. In general, the length of Technical courses falls within the
following ranges:
-
Community Coach (formerly Level 1): 8-14 hrs
-
Provinical Coach (formerly Level 2): 12-21 hrs
-
National Coach (formerly Level 3): 16-30 hrs
The cost of these courses vary from $75 - $300 and the courses
are offered throughout the year around the province based on demand.
Practical
The Practical component of the 3M NCCP is designed to provide coaches with
feedback on their effectiveness when coaching. At Levels 1 and 2, for example,
factors evaluated include the organization of the practice session and coaches'
ability to explain, demonstrate, and provide feedback on skills. For
volleyball, the practical aspect varies depending on the level.
-
Community Coach (formerly Level 1): Self-Assessment and Observation of a
practice by a certified coach.
-
Provinical Coach (formerly Level 2): mentoring and tutoring by a certified
level 2+ coach
-
National Coach (formerly Level 3): mentoring and tutoring by a certified level
3+ coach
